Calvary Murrieta, the top-seed in Division V softball, has forfeited its opening round victory over Barstow.
Calvary was in violation of Section 2523.2 of the CIF-SS Blue Book: ‘Teams entered in the softball playoffs will NOT be permitted to take batting practice on the day of a playoff game prior to the commencement of the contest.’
Batting practice is defined as, ‘any type of pitching motion with ANY type of ball from in front of the batter (including pitching machines, underhand tossing, overhand throwing, or pepper).
Tiffany Bleil, Calvary Murrieta head coach, said that she was not aware of the rule.
‘All season we tossed wiffle balls at the girls before games. This is my first year as head coach, and If I had known that this was not allowed during the playoffs, I would not have done it.’ she said.
Barstow will advance to face Western in Tuesday’s second round.
