Chad Lewis hit a 1-and-2 slider over the right-field fence for a two-run home run with one out in the sixth inning to wipe out a 3-2 deficit and lift Huntington Beach Marina to a 4-3 victory over Huntington Beach Edison, moving the Vikings into a first-place tie in the Sunset League.
Marina (19-3, 9-2) and Edison (16-4, 9-2) battled in 10 innings earlier in the week, with Edison winning, 2-1. Pitchers Kurt Heyer of Edison and Paul Strong of Marina were effective again. Heyer (7-2), who threw 10 innings this week, struck out seven and allowed four hits. Strong (6-1) struck out eight and allowed four hits.
Pablo Contreras had a two-run single in the first inning for Marina. Edison scored three runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead, with Chris Czerniachowski’s RBI double the key hit. But Czerniachowski was later ejected from the game by the umpire for saying something after a strikeout, and his absence on the final at-bat hurt the Chargers.
