Canyon coach Stan Delus has resigned following revelations that his team would have to forfeit its 11 wins for using two ineligible players.

The Southern Section confirmed Friday morning that two Canyon players falsified information on their transfer papers. The players, Vanessa Aguilar (who transferred from Van Nuys) and Alexa Davison (Reseda), have been declared ineligible for the remainder of the season. Aguilar was the team’s leading scorer, averaging 12.1 ppg and Davison led the team in rebounds.

Delus told Jacob Pollon of the Daily News, ‘I made some bad decisions. I take full responsibility for what’s going on.’

Delus’ assistant, Todd Jackson, has been named the interim coach.

This was supposed to be a breakout season for the Cowboys, who managed to make the playoffs last year despite having one of the youngest teams in the Foothill League. With nine league games remaining, including tonight’s game against Golden Valley, the Cowboys can still make the playoffs provided it can overcome the loss of its coach and two of its best players.
