Boys’ basketball: Taft opens with convincing victory

Taft began its basketball season with a 78-52 victory over Manual Arts in the Westchester tournament on Monday. Michael Williams scored 18 points. Freshman Landon Drew, who missed five days of practice to travel to Hawaii to watch his brother, Larry, a freshman at North Carolina, did not start and played sparingly because he was out of shape.
Taft will play surprising Birmingham in a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday at Westchester. Birmingham defeated Inglewood behind point guard Jordan Friedman, who scored 35 points.
Dominguez, Windward and Westchester play in first-round games today at Westchester. Action begins at 3 p.m.
