Twenty-four seasons ago, Fullerton defeated La Mirada to win the Southern Section Central Conference football championship.
Tonight at 7, El Dorado returns to Fullerton District Stadium for a nonleague game against the host Indians that has been greatly anticipated by three members of the visiting Golden Hawks’ coaching staff.
El Dorado Coach Jeff Bailey was a starting offensive tackle on the 1984 Fullerton team, offensive coordinator Aaron Acton was the Indians’ quarterback and quality control assistant Richi Burrell was a wide receiver in the 17-7 victory.
“It’s pretty exciting, this is the first time I’ve stepped on that field in more than 20 years and it means a lot that we’re coming back,” Burrell said Thursday afternoon.
With their El Dorado team off to a 1-0 start, however, Burrell wasn’t overly caught up in sentimentality. “Hopefully, we smoke ‘em,” he said.
