The first player selected in Round 9 of the Major League Baseball first-year player draft Friday morning was left-handed pitcher Shawn Smith of Saugus, taken by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 263rd overall pick. Smith has committed to Cal State Northridge.
With the 274th overall pick, the Oakland Athletics have selected Mitchell LeVier, a catcher from Fullerton College. However, on the Fullerton College website, LeVier, a graduate of California High, is listed as an outfielder-pitcher. Hmmmmm.
