I’m at Griffith Park for the first round of the City Section championships and so far no one has missed a tee time. The field of 77 players was divided into 20 groups, over half of which are already on the course.

They’ll be playing the Harding Course (6,536 yards) today, then switch to the longer Wilson Course (6,942 yards) for Wednesday’s final round. Unfortunately, neither spectators (parents, friends, classmates) and media (like me) are allowed on the course during competition so it looks as if I’ll have to hang out at the 19th hole until front nine scores start trickling in.

Since I’ve got a few hours to kill, I figured I’d dig up a nugget of trivia for all you hardcore duffers: Who are the only two players to win the City tournament three consecutive times?

Give up? Well, if you’ve followed the sport at all the last few years at least one name will ring a bell.

The answer is Darren Angel of Granada Hills (who accomplished the feat in the early 1990s) and Daniel Park of Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, who won his third straight last spring. Angel went on to play at Arizona State and Park is in his freshman season at USC, which is currently ranked third in the nation by Golfweek.com.
