Girls’ basketball: Mira Costa surviving in postseason jungle

Nobody thought the Mira Costa Mustangs could hack through the dense thickets of postseason jungle. Especially after suffering such a massive casualty.

Amanda Johnson, the team’s point guard, ripped up a knee in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division I-A quarterfinals. Her season was over, as was Mira Costa’s. Or so you’d presume. Lost were Johnson’s 10 points and three assists per game, along with her savvy floor generalship.

The Mustangs stumbled in the section finals but they’ve improvised in the Southern California Division II regionals. Sure you know by now that they whipped up some revenge in whipping Redondo last night. The Sea Hawks nabbed the section crown after unleashing a 14-point beat-down on the Johnson-less Mustangs on Friday. But that’s so rearview mirror now.

Only one more team sits in Mira Costa’s pathway to the regional crown -- Ayala, which will play the Mustangs at the Sports Arena at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

And that also means Mira Costa has nearly escaped the jungle.
