Games don’t get any bigger than the Trinity League showdown between Santa Margarita and Mater Dei on Wednesday. And no, I’m not referring to that epic encounter on the hardwood. I’m talking about the rival schools’ clash on the soccer pitch.

Mike Munoz and Alex Rodrigues scored goals five minutes apart in the first half and goalie Billy Thompson made seven saves for his 11th shutout as the Eagles (14-2-4 overall, 5-1-1 in league) won, 2-0, and moved into first place alone with a game in hand on Mater Dei.

Santa Margarita, a section co-champion with Loyola last season, is ranked second in the Division I poll. The ninth-ranked Monarchs (16-5-3, 5-2-1) had not allowed a goal in four games since losing to the Eagles, 3-1, in the first round of league play.

The league title is still up for grabs, with Orange Lutheran and Servite also in the mix, but now only Santa Margarita controls its own fate.
