Looks as if none of the great showdowns I envisioned for the Dick Comly Invitational at Victor Valley College came to fruition.

Some of the guys I mentioned in a blog previewing the event last week did not participate, and others wrestled up a weight -- Cody Bollinger of Sultana, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section at 140, took first place at 145; or down a weight -- Eric Lopez of Hesperia, ranked No. 4 at 140, was the 135-pound champion and the middle-weight MVP.

Perhaps the ultimate showdown ended up being in the team competition, where the top three finishers -- Hesperia, Las Vegas Cimarron-Memorial and Sultana, respectively -- were separated by only 4.5 points, with fourth-place Tehachapi nearly 100 points behind those three.

Daniel Gudino at 125 and Andrew Collins at 130 joined Lopez as individual champions for Hesperia, and both Gudino and Lopez defeated Cimarron-Memorial wrestlers in the finals to help their team’s cause even more. Read all about it here.

Hesperia and Sultana will see each other once again in Saturday’s Mojave River League finals at Hesperia.
