If the Westchester boys’ basketball team is still smarting from Friday’s 68-63 loss to Fairfax, it had better put that loss behind it in a hurry. Next up for the Comets is a trip north along Pacific Coast Highway to Palisades to meet a squad that gave Fairfax all it could handle before succumbing, 57-53, on Jan. 11.
Westchester, third in The Times’ top-25 poll, can ill afford an emotional letdown. No. 21 Palisades has won three in a row since its loss to No. 7 Fairfax -- a game the Dolphins had a chance to win despite shooting 16 of 50 from the field.
Such is life in the Western League, which boasts three of the top four teams in the City Section. Every game matters and Wednesday’s contest is no exception. Westchester (18-3) and Palisades (20-3) are tied for second and both need a win to stay in contention for the league title.
Palisades’ gym was filled to capacity for the game against Fairfax and the Comets can expect a similar crowd awaiting them at the 4 p.m. tip-off. Do the Dolphins have the talent and discipline needed to pull off the upset? Absolutely. Whatever happens, it should be yet another old-fashioned shootout in the wild, wild west.
