Canyon’s youth better get used to winning

I don’t think anyone on the Canyon boys’ basketball team was looking to make excuses for its 57-38 loss to Saugus on Friday night, but the youth factor definitely played a role in Cowboys’ inability to crack the multi-flavored Centurion defensive code.
‘Except for Cody [Anderson] and Mark [Lewis], everyone on this team is still getting used to winning,’ Canyon Coach Chad Phillips said.
It turns out the Canyon junior varsity team has struggled over the last two years and league wins are still something of a novelty to all the newbies on the team. Still, not every Cowboy was convinced about the team’s youth-inspired Achilles’ heel.
‘Maybe it had something to do with [the loss] a little bit,’ Canyon center Cody Anderson said, ‘but for the most part, we were never really in this one. We just came out flat and didn’t show any energy.’
Anderson was pretty adamant about his ‘low energy’ comments and judging by the slight tightening of his jaw and the slightly angry tone in his voice while he was talking about it, my guess is he’s going to clamp on the team jumper cables when Canyon plays at Valencia on Tuesday.
So the Cowboy kids better get used to the idea of being a top-flight team because I’m sure they don’t want a 6-foot-9 enforcer breathing down their necks.
