The Santee boys’ basketball team entered the season with something to prove and, so far, the Falcons are making their points where it counts the most -- on the scoreboard.
Senior center Joshua Chatman scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter of a 63-42 Southern League victory over host Contreras Friday night that moved Santee one step closer to Coach Curtis Hughes’ first goal: winning the program’s first league championship.
Chatman, faced with double- and triple-teams all game, added 14 rebounds, five assists and three blocks for the Falcons (7-4, 2-0) and Anquan Hayden and Arthur Fields each had 12 points.
‘In the fourth quarter I told Josh [Chatman] not to put the ball on the floor but to keep it up high, use a quick spin and power it up,’ Hughes said. ‘Once he did that, he was unstoppable.’
Santee has three more league games next week. The Falcons travel to West Adams Prep on Monday and Bravo Medical on Wednesday before hosting Elizabeth Learning Center on Friday.
So what is Hughes’ second goal?
‘Realistically, we’re a new school so we’ll probably be in the City Invitational tournament,’ Hughes said. ‘I know we have a ways to go but if we just keep improving, I think we have a golden opportunity to win it.’
