Paulson is a shooting star at La Sierra

The highest-scoring boys’ basketball player in the Inland Empire might be a bit of an unknown. He is to me.

Nick Paulson, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard for La Sierra, is averaging 28.9 points this season, the fifth-highest scoring average in the state, according to MaxPreps.com. Haven’t seen him play, but it looks as if he knows how to get to the stripe, averaging nearly 10 free throws a game.

He showed he could get it done against the top teams too, scoring 25 points in a 72-49 loss Wednesday night to Riverside King, ranked No. 9 in the Southland by, you guessed it, The Times.

La Sierra is kind of a middle-of-the-road program in the Inland Empire, so it’ll be interesting to see if Paulson stays with the Eagles. I imagine if he’s really that good a player, there’s probably a temptation to transfer to a championship-caliber team like, well, King.

Then again, he probably wouldn’t have such an impressive scoring average if he played for a top-notch program.
