She’s not cocky. Not egotistical. Nothing like that. ‘I’m truly not being arrogant,’ said Millikan girls’ basketball Coach Lorene Morgan. ‘But what surprised me was that we weren’t on it to begin with.’
Morgan was discussing The Times’ preseason rankings, which excluded her Millikan Rams.
Now, look -- four weeks into the season, the once overlooked Rams have won 10 in a row, beat No. 1-ranked Long Beach Poly last week and have rocketed up to the ranking’s No. 5 spot. ‘We’re thrilled,’ Morgan said.
The reason for the rise: a gaggle of gutsy girls and stars like Arizona-bound Courtney Clements (18.6 points and 12.6 rebounds), San Diego State recruit Kalena Tutt (10.3 rebounds) and highly recruited junior Ashley Mitchell (10.4 points and 5.5 assists).
The only question now: Can the Rams (12-2, 2-0) climb higher, possibly to the No. 1 perch? Morgan says yes, and so do I.
