So who should be the Southland Coach of the Year for football? Here’s a short list of candidates who immediately spring to mind. Weigh in, or nominate your own and state your case. Who knows, he just might be selected The Times COY when the team is released on Dec. 26.
- Ray Fenton, Cypress: In his third season, led at-large Cypress to Southern Division title
- Matt Logan, Centennial: Wife died over the summer, cared for two children and still managed to direct Huskies to No. 1 ranking
- Brian Barnes, Tesoro: First-year coach took over a 1-9 program, made lineup changes after four weeks and guided it to South Coast League title, including victories over Mission Viejo and San Clemente.
- Jim Kunau, Orange Lutheran: After winning State Division II Bowl with POY Aaron Corp, guided team to semifinals of Pac-5 and lost to champion LB Poly, 2-0.
- Jeremiah Ross, Crespi: His starting quarterback was lost for the season in Game 1, but the Celts still rolled, all the way to the Pac-5 finals.
- Ed Croson, Birmingham: One of those who could be chosen every year, Croson molded Birmingham into perhaps the best City team in two decades.
