When the Westchester boys’ basketball team, No. 2 in The Times’ preseason rankings, bolted to a 9-2 lead in the first two minutes of its championship quarterfinal game against San Juan Capistrano Serra in the Ocean View tournament, I thought the Comets were too athletic for the Lions. But JSerra wound up leading at the end of the first quarter, 16-13.
And so far, the Lions’ 6-foot-11 center Chris Gabriel is proving to be a load for the Comets to defend inside the lane. Gabriel is not the fastest big guy I’ve seen but once he’s inside, he’s been almost impossible to move out.
