Girls’ Volleyball: Not just pretty in pink

Nearly 10 months after their last meeting, the Mira Costa and Redondo girls’ volleyball teams will go at it again, this time for a cause greater, even, than the Southern California regional championship.
The Mustangs (20-0, 4-0), ranked No. 1 in the state by MaxPreps.com and No. 1 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com, will meet Redondo at 6:15 tonight/Tuesday in a Bay League match at Mira Costa that will also serve as a fund-raiser in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Mira Costa players will be dressed in pink warm-up T-shirts and pink socks, and a portion of the gate receipts will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an organization dedicated to breast-cancer awareness and fundraising for research and support of breast heatlth and screening.
Admission to regular-season matches typically is free, but spectators will be charged $5 tonight, and they are being asked to wear pink clothing. Additional donations for the cause also will be collected at the door, and there will be a drawing for a set of golf clubs.
Redondo players plan to dress in pink socks and wear pink ribbons. The Seahawks upset unbeaten Mira Costa, ranked No. 1 nationally at the time, in five games in the Southern Section Division I-AA championship match last season -- it was one of the best high school events I’ve ever seen -- before the Mustangs rebounded in the Division II Southern regional final a week later.
Redondo (20-6, 3-0) is ranked No. 11 in the state and No. 32 nationally.
‘We usually get a lot of people out for this match, so it’ll be a big match, and the players are excited to be contributing to a good cause with it,’ she said.
The team also has asked some local businesses to donate $25 for each ace served against the Sea Hawks.
‘We have a lot of people who can serve well,’ Mira Costa Coach Lisa Zimmerman said. ‘That’s one of the best weapons we have.’
Against opponents and breast cancer, that is.
