Wow, now even an overgrown fake crustacean is confident enough to take on Charlie Crist.

If the beleaguered governor decides to run as an Independent in Florida’s Senate contest, he’s got competition there too.

But this one is a giant crab. No, not Katherine Harris. Stoney the Stone Crab, the mascot for the minor league baseball club, the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

Stoney announced his candidacy Thursday after getting word that Crist was canceling his planned appearance to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Friday. The fluffy blue crab sounded confident at a news conference. Confused. But confident.

‘Four score and seven years ago, I don’t know what year it was,’ Stoney said. ‘But Friday, April 23 will be a night that will live in infamy.’

His agenda? ‘I don’t want to live in a world with no baseball or hot dogs,’ he said.

Crist has until April 30 to decide whether to take on Stoney as an Independent or stay in the race as a Republican, where he’s trailing Marco Rubio by more than 20 points in some polls.
