WASHINGTON -- At the Washington Monument today were Lindsey and Emma Willis of Jacksonville, Fla., with their 12-year-old grandson, Samuel Johnson. They took an 11-hour bus ride to Richmond, Va., where their hotel is, then left at midnight on another bus for a four-hour trip to D.C. The African American family was dropped off at RFK Stadium, then walked at least a mile to get another bus to the Mall, arriving about 4:30 a.m.
‘This is history I wanted my grandson to see. This is the dream that Martin Luther King talked about,’ Lindsey Willis said as he looked toward the Lincoln Memorial, where King spoke.
His wife, shivering, added: ‘I’m not a person of cold weather, so this had to be special for me.’
Samuel said, ‘I can’t feel my toes.’’
