Juan Aguiar, a 29-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy on Tuesday, Nov. 3, between the 16400 and 16700 blocks of Prairie Avenue in Lawndale, authorities said.
According to sheriff’s officials, Aguiar pointed a gun at deputies and shot at them about 10:30 p.m. Deputies returned fire.
Sheriff’s officials said they believed more than 30 shots were fired during the incident but stressed that it did not appear to be contagious fire, a phenomenon in which police fire their weapons because others are doing so.
One deputy was injured in the exchange, but was treated and released from the hospital the next morning, authorities said.
