Kings vs. Red Wings: Kings start hot then unravel; trail 3-1 after one period

The day went from good to bad to worse for the Kings, who trail the Detroit Red Wings, 3-1, at the end of the first period Monday at Staples Center.

It took 30 seconds for the Detroit Red Wings to reverse the momentum the Kings had built throughout the day.

The Kings acquired power forward Dustin Penner and handed Justin Williams a four-year, $14.6-million contract extension during the day. They then took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game when Michal Handzus chipped in a rebound off the boards for a power-play goal.

Then … Detroit’s Drew Miller scored a soft goal, throwing the puck into the crease and off the right pad of goaltender Jonathan Quick to tie the score. There was nothing Quick could do 30 seconds later, when Danny Cleary charged down the slot, reached out and redirected Jiri Hudler’s pass into the net for a 2-1 lead.

Nicklas Lidstrom’s blue-line shot threaded its way through five players for a power play goal and 3-1 lead.
