The UCLA fans who departed Pauley Pavilion on Saturday evening did so mostly with smiles on their faces after the Bruins defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 72-61, to snap a four-game losing streak.
UCLA overwhelmed the Mustangs with the inside trio of Joshua Smith, Brendan Lane and Reeves Nelson late in the first half and got some nice play from guard Jerime Anderson in the final 20 minutes. Anderson scored eight consecutive points for the Bruins during one stretch and fed Tyler Honeycutt with an alley-oop pass for a dunk that repelled Cal Poly’s final rally.
Smith had 19 points and 12 rebounds for his second career double-double, which earned him a loud ovation when he was removed from the game with 1 minute 15 seconds remaining. Nelson had 13 points and Honeycutt added 11 for the Bruins (4-4), who led by as many as 17 points in the second half.
David Hanson led Cal Poly (3-5) with 18 points. The Mustangs were outrebounded, 39-24, and shot 42% to UCLA’s 45.3%.
