New Angels prospect Loek Van Mil is a tall order; Bulger, Stokes activated

The Angels and Twins completed the trade Friday that sent closer Brian Fuentes to Minnesota, with the Angels acquiring 7-foot-1 right-hander Loek Van Mil on Wednesday as the player to be named.

Van Mil, a 25-year-old native of Oss, Netherlands, is the tallest player in professional baseball. He went 1-2 with a 6.37 earned run average in 23 relief appearances for the Twins’ double-A affiliate in New Britain, Conn., this season after beginning the year at Class-A Fort Myers, where he went 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three outings.

Van Mil, who signed with the Twins as a non-drafted free agent in 2005, will report to the Angels’ double-A affiliate at Arkansas this week. He has been known to hit 94-95 mph on the radar gun with his fastball, but his secondary pitches need work, and he has had some elbow problems in the past.

The Angels also announced that relievers Jason Bulger and Brian Stokes, who have been on rehabilitation assignment with triple-A Salt Lake, have been reinstated from the 15-day disabled list and will join the Angels in Seattle Wednesday night.
