The Ducks have signed left wing Kyle Calder to a one-year contract and assigned him to the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL.
He signed a deal that will pay him $500,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 at the minor-league level.
Calder played for the Kings last season, scoring eight goals and 27 points, but wasn’t re-signed. He attended the Ducks’ training camp on a tryout basis and was among the late cuts after going scoreless in four exhibition games.
He has two 20-goal seasons--2003-04 and 2005-06 with the Chicago Blackhawks--but those seemed pretty distant while he was scoring seven goals for the Kings in 2007-08 and eight in 2008-09.
This looks purely like a depth move and not part of something bigger that might straighten out the foundering Ducks, who have lost four straight. They play again Friday, when they face the Vancouver Canucks at the Honda Center. -- Helene Elliott
