His voice hoarse, Derek Jeter twice excused himself to cough as he stood before his locker and spoke with reporters Wednesday. But he also said twice that he wasn’t sick.

At about the same time, three floors above the clubhouse in an interview room, Yankees manager Joe Girardi was telling the truth: Jeter is sick. And he’s not getting better quickly.

‘I noticed it on Monday,’ Girardi said. ‘He was still pretty sick [Tuesday]. I’m hoping that he feels better, but it didn’t seem to affect him. That’s just the type of player that Derek is. He’s tough.’

In fact, the ailing Yankee captain homered in his first at-bat Monday. Girardi said whatever bug Jeter has doesn’t seem to have spread to the rest of the team, as happened with the Cleveland Browns, who had 12 players miss practice with flu-like symptoms Wednesday.

‘I haven’t noticed anyone else get it yet,’ Girardi said. ‘So hopefully no one else gets it. Fortunately he hasn’t had the fever to go along with it.’
