Weekend’s television soccer fare is worth a squint

Now that the 2010 World Cup qualifiers are out of the way for a month, it’s back to the club teams, and there are several matches this weekend that, as the saying goes, are worth a squint.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea (4:30 a.m. Pacific, ESPN2)

It’s going to take a really dedicated fan at this hour, but the game offers the chance to see if one of Villa’s two Americans goalkeepers, Brad Friedel or Brad Guzan, can thwart the Blues.

Hamburg vs Bayer Leverkusen (9:30 a.m., GOL TV)

Germany’s top two, both unbeaten with 6-0-2 records, try to sort out who rules the Bundesliga roost for the next week or so.

Real Madrid vs Valladolid (10:55 a.m., ESPN Deportes)

Can second-place Real, without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, keep from falling further behind Barcelona in Spain?

SUNDAY

AC Milan vs AS Roma (11:30 a.m., FSC and FSE)

Start the day off watching David Beckham’s past and future team before switching to watch him play for his current one.

Houston Dynamo vs Galaxy (noon, TeleFutura)

The battle for first place in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference, remembering, of course, that Chivas USA might have taken the lead by the time this one kicks off.

Club America vs Puebla (2 p.m., Univision)

Club America is a so-so team so far this season, but a victory over tie-merchants Puebla (seven draws in 11 games) would lift it closer to the top in Mexico.
