The past couple of days in L.A. sports have featured one compelling news story trying to top another. Good thing we have the Internet, otherwise The Times might have run out of ink.
- The Dodgers set their own record for home wins to open the season.
- The Lakers inexplicably blew a playoff game at home against Houston.
- The Dodgers set the MLB record for home wins to open the season.
- The same night, the Lakers game featured two ejections and five technicals.
- Moments later, Manny Ramirez drew a 50-game suspension for a banned substance.
A potential suspension for Derek Fisher will probably pale in comparison to that last one. What could top it? Next week, UCLA will announce its Pauley Pavilion renovation plans. At this rate, maybe it’ll also announce that John Wooden is returning to coaching.
News is still surfacing about Manny Ramirez, but here’s everything you should know as of this moment:
- Manny was suspended (OK, you knew that) 50 games for taking a banned substance.
- Manny admitted that he did it.
- Yahoo Sports is reporting that it was NOT ‘an agent customarily used for performance enhancing,’ though it could potentially be used to mask the effects of steroids, and that it’s also used to enhance sex drive.
- People all around MLB are scratching their heads.
- Fans are screaming from rooftops. (Or the modern equivalent: commenting on our blogs)
- Shaq is frustrated: ‘Dam manny ramirez, come on man Agggggggggh, agggggggh, agggggh.’
- Jon Weisman is trying to keep it all in perspective.
