Rick Ankiel and the St. Louis Cardinals avoided their scheduled arbitration hearing today by agreeing to a one-year, $2.825-million contract. The amount was at the midpoint of the salary figures that were exchanged by the two sides last month.
Ankiel, who is represented by Scott Boras, asked for $3.3 million. The Cardinals offered him $2.35 million.
The arbitration case would’ve been an interesting one because of Ankiel’s unique history -- he started his major-league career as a starting pitcher and became an outfielder.
