Galaxy brings Todd Dunivant back to Los Angeles

Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena on Monday gave himself another option on defense by bringing left-sided defender Todd Dunivant back to Los Angeles and sending some allocation money to Toronto FC in return.

The move is expected to be formally announced on Tuesday.

Dunivant, 28, was a starting defender for the Galaxy’s 2005 MLS championship team before being traded to the New York Red Bulls in 2006 and later to Toronto. The former Stanford player has appeared in 143 regular-season and playoff games in MLS, scoring three goals and assisting on 10 others.

He was used sparingly in 2008 because of injuries, playing in nine games and starting five while totaling only 412 minutes.

Arena is familiar with the player, however, having coached him in New York and having given him his only national team appearance.

The acquisition gives Arena at least four options at left back. He already has Eddie Lewis and Mike Randolph who can play the position, although both are more useful in left midfield. Venezuela’s Leo Bautista, if he is signed, could be contending with Dunivant for the starting spot.
