USC Coach Pete Carroll has hired former Denver Broncos assistant Jeremy Bates as assistant head coach for offense and quarterbacks coach.
Bates replaces Carl Smith, who was named to the position on Jan. 6. But Smith has interviewed with the Cleveland Browns for the quarterback coach slot.
