Monday night football had presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain provide the entertainment (the politicians didn’t spike the ratings; in fact the game was watched by fewer people than had tuned into a previous Monday night game between the Cowboys and Eagles).

This Sunday night NBC will try to pump the numbers by introducing a new Bruce Springsteen song, ‘Working on a Dream,’ during halftime.

Don’t get too excited. It’s not as if Bruce and the E Street Band will be at the Cowboys-Redskins game rocking the house or anything. Excerpts from the song will provide the soundtrack for NFL highlights. So if you’re at the game, there won’t be anything for you except the concession stands.

Which is fine, because there will be another football star returning to the field during the game. Dallas quarterback Tony Romo is supposed to be back from an injury. So rather than listen to an excerpt from a Springsteen song that probably won’t be nearly as good as ‘Born in ihe USA,’ it would be more entertaining to look for Romo’s girlfriend, Jessica Simpson, and figure out if she’s overweight, underweight, overdressed or underdressed.

And then imagine in your head how NFL highlights would sound with a Jessica Simpson soundtrack. A song like I Wanna Love You Forever (good luck with that Jess). Or Where Are You? (hopefully on the football field real soon). And Come On Over (add your own thoughts).
