HBO renews ‘Luck’

HBO has renewed horse race drama ‘Luck’ for a second season, the network announced Tuesday.
The second season will consist of 10 episodes and is lined up for a January 2013 premiere. Production is scheduled to resume at the end of February at Santa Anita Park and other locations.
The series starring Dustin Hoffman, from director Michael Mann and ‘Deadwood’ creator David Milch, gives an insider’s look at the world of horse racing and its gambling dwellers.
HBO aired a sneak peak of ‘Luck’ back in December, which brought in 1.1 million viewers. Its actual premiere Sunday night also brought in 1.1 million viewers. In contrast, premium cable competitor ‘Shameless,’ which airs on Showtime, brought in 1.37 million viewers in its 9 p.m. time slot.
The renewal is hardly shocking considering the star power of Hoffman, as well as Nick Nolte. And considering HBO’s multi-year deal with Milch.
