‘Sons of Anarchy’ screening: Love and F-bombs

It should come as no surprise that more than a few F-bombs and other profanities were flying when FX screened the premiere episode of the fourth season of FX’s hit outlaw biker drama ‘Sons of Anarchy’ at Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome on Tuesday.

And it should be less of a surprise that some of the F-bombs were dropped by Kurt Sutter, the outspoken creator of the series who has become known for his fiery tweets and blog posts blasting a variety of targets from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to ‘Mad Men’ creator Matthew Wiener.

But Sutter was noticeably subdued, humble and even a bit emotional as he addressed the packed Dome and eloquently thanked FX President and General Manager John Landgraf, as well as his cast and crew.

‘Now that I’m not on Twitter, there’s so much that I want to [expletive] say,’ quipped Sutter, who recently announced that he was through tweeting. He added that he had come to ‘realize on a daily basis how lucky I am’ to work on the show and collaborate with his colleagues.

Said Sutter: ‘I love what I do. I’m a storyteller, so I enjoy the company of no one. I spend a tremendous amount of time in my head. ... I hate criticism. And I don’t like team sports.’

Giving high praise to his producers, writers and cast of the series, Sutter singled out Charlie Hunnam, who stars as Jax, the conflicted member of the biker gang. Sutter and Hunnam appeared to have a bit of a falling-out a few weeks ago during the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Beverly Hills. The two reportedly had an argument that prompted Hunnam to skip out on a ‘Sons of Anarchy’ panel before the session began.

Sutter seemed to choke up a bit as he said ‘it’s a honor to grow and work with Charlie,’ and described working with him and the other actors as ‘the most satisfying creative experience of my life.’

Returning to his seat after his remarks, Sutter passed by Hunnam, and the men warmly embraced.

Landgraf said ‘Sons of Anarchy’ ranks as the highest-rated series in FX’s history, and he declared the fourth season, which launches Sept. 6, as the best season yet.
