Scotty McCreery has the bragging rights to being the youngest winner of ‘American Idol,’ but could his age have kept him from the crown?

He didn’t have to deal with that added stress going into Wednesday’s finale after a state judge in Los Angeles approved a minor’s contract that cleared the way for the 17-year-old country crooner to take the top prize, according to the Associated Press.

Superior Court Judge Marjorie Steinberg reviewed and approved a draft contract on Monday, paving the way for McCreery to receive $250,000 for winning the title and recording his first record.

The judge approved the same type of agreement for runner-up Lauren Alaina. The second-place finisher is set to receive $87,500 as an advance; that figure will double if she records an album.

Legally binding contracts for performers under 18 require a judge’s approval. This season featured the youngest-ever ‘Idol’ final contenders in McCreery and Alaina.
