If it weren’t for the fact they are penned behind metal barricades amid the exhaust fumes of the traffic lumbering by, the 100-some writers assembled in front of Rockefeller Center in New York could be at a social mixer. The marching has come to a halt, mostly because there’s no room in their cordoned-off area, but also because sandwiches have been handed out. Writers are standing around in small groups, munching and exchanging industry gossip. The mood is upbeat; people who haven’t seen each other in a while exchange excited greetings. Tourists amble by slowly, panning the crowd with their camcorders and peering into the enclosure as if searching for a particularly distinguished animal at the zoo.
