Seminal jam band Phish have announced that tickets for Super Ball IX, the latest in a long chain of legendary weekend blowouts, are going on sale April 4.
The band’s ninth festival (and first Fourth of July bash) will take place on the auto race track at Watkins Glen International on July 1-3, according to the band’s video announcement released Thursday at Superballix.com.
Located on the southern tip of Seneca Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes region, this year’s Super Ball is the first major music festival to be held at Watkins Glen International since the Summer Jam rock festival in 1973, which featured the Allman Brothers Band, the Band and the Grateful Dead.
Tickets for the three-day event are priced at just more than $200 and go on sale Monday at noon EDT. Like previous Phish festivals, the event includes group activities, attractions and installations. Camping and travel packages are also available. Tent gear and hacky-sacks not included.
It’s been almost 15 years since 90,000 Phishheads rushed to the campground of a decommissioned Air Force base in upstate New York for Clifford Ball in August 1996, a landmark event that pioneered the concept of a single band hosting its own music festival. Subsequent Phish parties such as the Great Went and Lemonwheel also earned their place in the jam-band pantheon.
Before the fest kicks off, Phish will also be rolling out its 2011 summer tour in New York at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts over Memorial Day weekend. Before you head up to the festival (since you’re probably already planning to follow them on tour), be on the lookout for new Phish vinyl coming down the pipeline. “Two Soundchecks,’ a limited edition, 7-inch vinyl live recording, will be available at participating independently owned record stores starting April 16, just in time for Record Store Day.
