Rep. Howard L. Berman, battling fellow Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman for a newly drawn San Fernando Valley congressional district, raised more than $1 million in a three-month period, campaign finance records filed Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission showed.

But Sherman, also no slouch in the fundraising department, had more left to spend--nearly $3.7 million--than Berman, who reported having $2.9 million on hand at the Dec. 31 end of the latest reporting period. That’s because Sherman, who reported raising about $125,000 between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, had stockpiled a considerable chunk of funds from previous campaigns.
