New polls in governor’s race show different numbers

Two new polls are out in the race for California governor, showing very different numbers on voter preferences in the race.

The Public Policy Institute of California shows the race in a virtual dead heat, with a large segment of voters still undecided, while a CNN/Time magazine poll shows Democrat Jerry Brown opening up a lead over Republican Meg Whitman.

The PPIC poll shows 38% for Whitman and 37% for Brown. Another 18% of those surveyed were undecided.

The CNN poll shows big leads for Brown and Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer. Both lead their Republican rivals 52%-39% in the survey. PPIC’s numbers are similar to recent Field Poll numbers showing a statistical tie and a large segment of voters still unsure about their choice for governor.

The CNN poll shows the widest lead for either Brown or Boxer of any recent survey.
