Some prominent blogs have noted ALIPAC’s (Americans for Legal Immigration) silly call for Meg Whitman to be arrested. This announcement smacks of non-noteworthy extremism (its call for Whitman’s arrest is legally off-base, since the proper enforcement mechanism would be to fine the guilty offender, not throw her in jail), and it should be discarded as such. Media Matters’ post in particular seems intended to cast Whitman as ALIPAC’s philosophical ally.

So far, Whitman’s October surprise strikes me as a lot less sexy than some would like. The theatrics and accusations of hypocrisy leveled against Whitman by attorney Gloria Allred and her client, Nicandra Diaz Santillan, surely beg for our attention. But this is really a paper chase, which requires the chore of sifting through documents to glean what Whitman knew when. Fringe groups that throw bombshells should be ignored.
