Nelly Avila Moreno, a notoriously brutal commander of the FARC rebel group in Colombia, has surrendered because of what she says is army pressure and a $900,000 price on her head that made her fear her own troops.

Analysts said the surrender of Nelly Avila Moreno, alias Karina, is a blow to the morale of the FARC, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, in whose ranks she fought for 24 years, earning a reputation as a fierce, resourceful and ruthless leader, writes Chris Kraul from Bogota.
