Reserve deputy dies of apparent suicide in youth locker room

A reserve deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was found dead Thursday morning from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound in a building across the street from its Industry station, authorities said.

The reserve deputy, who was not immediately identified, was discovered in the locker room of the Youth Activity League in the 100 block of North Hudson Avenue around 8:45 a.m. Sheriff’s officials did not say when the shooting occurred.

Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said the ‘death investigation’ is being handled by the sheriff’s homicide bureau and is ‘ongoing.’

Based on preliminary findings, the death was an apparent suicide, Whitmore said. The man is believed to have suffered a single gunshot to the chest.

Years ago, a sheriff’s deputy committed suicide in the same locker room but Whitmore said there was no connection between the cases ‘other than a tragic coincidence.’
