Moreno Valley police kill armed teen, officials say

A Moreno Valley police officer fatally shot an 18-year-old Friday after police responded to a call about a group of men creating a disturbance and carrying guns outside a residence, authorities said.

Police arrived at the 25000 block of Fir Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. to find that the men had fled in a vehicle, but a person who called authorities pointed out a car passing by and its passengers were among those involved, according to a statement from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

An officer attempted to stop the vehicle, and a man -- identified as Lamon Khiry Haslip of Ontario -- got out of the car and attempted to run away, authorities said. They said the officer caught up with him, pinning him on the ground and handcuffing him, as another officer arrived and saw Haslip roll onto his side.

According to the statement: The initial officer backed away from Haslip, calling out that Haslip had a gun. An officer then shot Haslip. Paramedics were called to the scene, where Haslip was pronounced dead. A search of his person recovered a loaded handgun.

The shooting officer, who has not been identified, has been placed on administrative leave, which is department policy, according to the statement. Neither officer was injured, authorities said.
