Two hikers rescued from Griffith Park

A Los Angeles Fire Department helicopter Sunday airlifted to safety two hikers who became stranded in a remote part of Griffith Park, officials said.

The man and woman, who were not identified, were uninjured, Griffith Park Ranger Josh Ornelas said.

The two called for help on a cellphone after leaving a marked trail in the late afternoon and ending up on a steep hillside near Dante’s View, Ornelas said. The LAFD tracked their location through the phone’s GPS and the helicopter reached them before nightfall, he added.

LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey said the hikers were hoisted into the copter with a cable and harness and flown to a park helipad.
