Outdoor beds: Dream designs for an afternoon nap

First we had the outdoor living and dining rooms. Then came the outdoor kitchen. Was the outdoor bedroom inevitable?
We started to report on cabanarama — how the shaded huts so popular at hotel pools were moving full force to the home — when it became clear that so much of the furniture for these backyard retreats were essentially outdoor beds. Take a look and ask yourself: Doesn’t an afternoon nap sound good right about now?
Dedon recently released images of its Swingrest, pictured here, a veritable backyard nest to be released in 2013. The suspended bed will have a rotating Corian side table and optional curtain for privacy.
To see what’s on the market now, at prices from $400 to $20,000, keep reading ...
City Camp is daybed, swing and cabana rolled into one: a stationary bed, as pictured at right, or a lounge suspended by leather-wrapped belts, above. (Applause for the storage built into the armrests.) The Dedon design can be covered with a tatami-style mattress or plush cushion. Retail prices for the structure start at $10,225 and rise depending on whether you add the tatami covers or upholstered cushions, drapes or sunshade. (For those so inclined, Dedon has a flagship showroom in West Hollywood.) Photo credits: Dedon
At the other end of the budget spectrum: the Luna Day Bed from Urban Home. The crescent of all-weather nylon is set on a metal frame. It’s $399.
Introduced this month at Teak Warehouse: The Beach Bed has headrests that adjust in both directions. (Admire each other or share a point of view?) The cushions are upholstered in Sunbrella all-weather fabric, and the canopy can retract in sections. Rods ring the beds in case you want to hang additional shades. Price: $7,995.
For a similar vibe at a lower price: The Cabana Sunbed also is new from Teak Warehouse. It’s 3 feet wide and has hidden wheels for easier maneuvering. Price: $1,095, Sunbrella all-weather cushion extra.
For those romantics who love a little “South Pacific†moment, Royal Botania offers a four-poster sling lounge called Kokoon. Price? The suggested retail starts at $19,818 and rises depending on options. Royal Botania dealers include Giati Designs and In-Ex.
And if those flowing drapes leave you needing a design-palate cleanser: Ibiza is Restoration Hardware’s interpretation of the bean bag chair, upholstered in a range of fabrics that are resistant to water, mildew and fading. The shell zips off for cleaning. The collection, pictured here, includes a lounge chair (regularly starts at $795, on sale starting at $505), double lounge chair (regularly starts at $1,295, on sale starting at $835) and a chaise (regularly starts at $1,095, on sale starting at $685). Those sale prices apply to a limited number of upholstery options, and prices go up depending on the fabric.
