The Deal: Crate & Barrel fall furniture sale

In a recent roundup of low-priced sofas, we went searching for the best sofas we could find for under $600. (It wasn’t easy.)

For those who can stretch the budget a bit more, a reminder: Crate & Barrel’s annual fall upholstery sale runs through Oct. 11. Select stock is 15% off, and custom orders are 25% off, meaning you’ll save $500 on a $2,000 custom order.

A couple of my picks: The Trace sofa, above right, regularly $1,499, is now $1,269. It’s stocked in putty and is available for immediate delivery (estimated cost: $83.95).The sofa also comes in 17 ‘stock plus’ colors that also are on sale but take longer for delivery. If you are ordering online, Crate & Barrel will send fabric samples by next-day air.

The Midcentury-style Allerton twin sleeper, above left, normally $2,199, is on sale for $1,869. It comes in 36 colors. I purchased the microfiber Troy sofa because the saleswoman assured me it could handle family traffic. She was right: Six years later, I can report that many a spill has been wiped away and it still looks fresh. Regularly $999, it’s on sale for $849.
