Trousdale in West Hollywood is the of-the-moment nightclub for celebrity sightings, but it also may be the launch pad for a design trend: the one-armed sofa ‘room.’

Inside the 4,500-square-foot nightclub (formerly Blowfish Sushi), designer John Sofio used a series of one-armed, Ultrasuede couches around tables to create VIP-like areas without the walls.

‘By leaving one arm off, it creates an open-door feeling on one side, then it’s closed on the other end,’ Sofio said. ‘It ends up making the areas feel like their own little rooms.’

(Of course, Trousdale has a true VIP area for the likes of Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie or Lady Gaga, with a faux fireplace, Ed Ruscha artwork and traditional two-armed sofas.)

Sofio custom-built all of the club’s seating, but a new spate of commercially available asymmetrical couches is hitting stores.

At the very top of the price scale is New York architect Eran Chen’s one-armed Sunk sofa collection for Moroso, pictured at right. It sells for $2,485 to $7,152 through GGM Italy in West Hollywood. At the other end is Urban Outfitter’s Stash Sofa, an asymmetric wood-and-cushioned piece with built-in storage, now on sale for $199. We’ve got more pictures on the jump.
