Oct. 12: The Shipley Nature Center and Ewing Irrigation host a seminar on the economics of rainwater harvesting from 6 to 9 p.m. A building demonstration of a subterranean rainwater storage system will follow on Oct. 13 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 17851 Goldenwest St., Huntington Beach. Oct. 13: Orange County and Los Angeles designers will be featured in Casa California, a design house presented by California Homes Magazine. Benefits the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. Oct. 14: The website Greenfolio.com hosts a showcase featuring the work of local furniture makers, artisans and artists who create work using sustainable materials and practices. The evening will feature presentations from companies introducing bedding, modular building systems and other products. 7 to 10 p.m. Livingreen, 10000 Culver Blvd., Culver City. Free. Oct. 15: The fall Thursday Garden Talks With Lili Singer series continues with a field trip to the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes. This private tram tour, narrated by biologist and plantswoman Laurel Woodley, will traverse the garden’s grounds including stops at the propagation workshop and the new Mediterranean-climate garden, where California natives predominate. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. $20. Oct. 16: The nonprofit preservation organization Pasadena Heritage will present its annual Craftsman Weekend featuring a tour of significant Craftsman-era houses, exhibits by antique dealers specializing in the Arts & Crafts Movement, special bus and walking tours and exclusive evening receptions at historic sites. Oct. 16: The Southland Orchid Show Committee celebrates its 50th anniversary with a show and sale Oct. 16 to 18 at the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens. Oct. 17: San Diego Botanic Garden, formerly Quail Botanical Gardens, hosts its 27th annual fall plant sale featuring donations from more than 100 local growers, wholesalers, retail nurseries and individuals.
