Fashion and still life photographer Mike Lorrig has turned his vegan convictions into art, creating a series of dramatically lit, richly detailed portraits of barnyard creatures. Printed on canvas, they are sufficiently sophisticated for a library and sweet enough to win the hearts of kids. (Hint: Even though the series includes glamour shots of roosters, a popular motif for kitchen decorating, don’t display them where you cook.)
A portion of the proceeds from sales of the photographs, which start at $200, will benefit the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary.
Lorrig’s work is available at Mercado in Silver Lake. The store’s co-owner Michelle Weaver had the bright idea to add a battery operated picture light to this 32 by 43-inch portrait of a goat named Miss Ellie Mae, which sells for $800. The picture light is a great upgrade for any framed work, Weaver says.
‘When I was growing up, my dad had them on all of the paintings in the house,’ she explains. ‘They make these already majestic photos look like Old Masters.’
