Dodgers’ Blake Hawksworth to undergo minor elbow surgery

Dodgers reliever Blake Hawksworth is scheduled to undergo a minor surgical procedure Wednesday to remove scar tissue and shave down a bone spur in his right elbow.

Hawksworth is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks. He should be pitching at some point in spring training and could be on the team’s opening-day roster, according to a team spokesman.

Hawksworth, who was 2-5 with a 4.08 earned-run average in 49 relief appearances last season, experienced discomfort on the back of his elbow when he started his off-season throwing program early last month. He was shut down for some time, but when he resumed throwing a couple of weeks ago, the discomfort was still there.

The operation will be performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
